Deciding to become a parent, growing a baby, and giving birth is one of the most important and miraculous events in our lives. When families feel safe and supported, it is an empowering and transformational experience, setting the stage for deep bonding and increased confidence in parenting. Being pregnant and giving birth deserves time, attention, care, and celebration! It is an event of a lifetime.
Throughout our lives we devote time, thought and money to the many endeavors we think are important or necessary: getting a cell phone, computer or tablet, education, clothes shopping, finding a home, buying a car, planning a wedding, finding the perfect present, going out to eat or going on vacation. These are all different for each of us but what is true for all of us is that we prioritize our finances around what we value the most. What is more important than bringing life into the world? Or more important that being in control of your prenatal care and birth experience?
The fee for home birth midwifery care is $4,500 if paid in full by 36 weeks of preganancy (otherwise it's $5,000). In insurance language, this is considered the "global package". This fee includes all prenatal care visits which are 1 hour long, 24 hour access to the midwives throughout your pregnancy and postpartum period, attendance at your birth, 2 home visits postpartum and a 6 week postpartum visit.
Unless otherwise arranged, the full fee will be paid by 36 weeks. If you plan to use insurance and it covers our services, you will get reimbursed after the birth. Every insurance plan is different in terms of how much of the fee will be reimbursed. We do not carry malpractice insurance and some insurance will not fully cover our services because of this. (More on insurance below)
Other fees include payment for an experienced midwife assistant at the birth ($700-900). This is paid separately to her at the 36 week home visit. Each expecting family is also responsible for purchasing their personal birth supplies ($50-$150) plus tub rental if this is desired. Mileage and insurance billing fees are also outside of the global package. Lab work, ultrasounds, and consultations with other providers are also not included in this fee but are generally covered under insurance plans. "Problem visits" are not included in the global package and might include a visit for a UTI or extra monitoring for the the baby.
To secure your care with Mama Bear Midwifery, a $500 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of your first visit. This is deducted from the final balance for my services.
We are interested in making sure that families wanting a home birth have access to one and we are willing to make any reasonable attempt to serve those who need financial flexibility. Please address this with us at the consult visit.
We are considered "out of network" for all insurance companies. We use an excellent billing service that takes care of any required pre-authorizations, filing the claim form, and all other aspects of billing.
Every insurance company is different and covers home birth to varying degrees. We recommend that you call your insurance company to find out if home birth is covered by an out of network provider and at what amount. Regardless of expected insurance reimbursement, the full fee for my services is due by 36 weeks.
It is the rule of the insurance companies that billing for the "global package" occurs after the birth of the baby. Reimbursement then comes after the billing is submitted and accepted. Reimbursement usually comes between 2-6 months.
